The Healthcare industry has always generated huge amounts of data. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) has caused the amount of this data to grow radically over the years. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (better known as Obama Care) will accelerate that growth. The vast majority of this data has been stored electronically and is increasing by a compound annual growth rate of 40 percent. Some applications, such as electronic medical records (EMRs), are growing up to 70 percent per year.
Losing business critical data can be devastating to any company, but losing data such as patient records can be life threatening. Fortunately, for one medical center in Chicago, IL, ACE RAID Recovery helped them avert just such a disaster. The Medial Center had a multi-terabyte SAN configuration with over 50 LUNs. When they called and spoke with one of ACE RAID Recovery’s agents, the client reported that the NTFS volumes on 5 LUNs could not be mounted. Without access to the patient records contained in those volumes no patient care could be performed, so it was imperative that the data be restored as soon as possible.
The best solution was the ACE Remote Recovery Manager or ARRM. Since all of the drives were active and functioning our engineers were able to quickly and securely connect remotely via ARRM and begin the diagnostics. What we found was all 5 LUNs had lost their partition and LVM configuration data. The engineers then downloaded our proprietary utilities and analyzed sectors on the LUNS and were able to gather enough metadata to re-create the lost volumes. Because the Client wanted us to work directly on the “live” data we decided to image all 5 LUNs to backup copies. We then manually repaired the LUNs in-place and delivered 100% of the patient data back to the Client in less than 24 hours.
